My Future DIL Tried to Claim My Emerald Ring as Her Engagement Ring After Refusing My Gift

I’m Martha, 48, a proud mom of two wonderful kids. My son Brandon recently got engaged to Alice, a woman I truly liked—at first. She was warm, confident, and seemed perfect for him. I welcomed her with open arms.

But everything changed when I gave the couple a handmade wedding gift. Jewelry-making has been my lifelong passion, and I spent weeks crafting a unique piece for Alice. Instead of gratitude, she frowned and pushed it back toward me.

“What I really want,” she said, “is your emerald ring. That should be my engagement ring. It’s an heirloom, isn’t it?”

I was stunned. That emerald ring wasn’t just jewelry—it was the first piece I ever designed, something I poured my soul into. It symbolized years of struggle, patience, and growth. And she wanted me to hand it over like it meant nothing.

I calmly told her no. If she couldn’t value the gift I made with love, then she wasn’t ready to understand the meaning of true family heirlooms. Brandon was caught between us, but I stood firm.

Later, I quietly slipped the ring into a box and gave it to my daughter Elisa instead—someone who cherished not just the gem, but the story behind it. Alice never got her way, and I never apologized. Some things are worth protecting, no matter who demands them.
