Richard, an 80-year-old widower, drives to Minnesota to surprise his daughter Deidre on his birthday. But when she opens the door in tears and refuses to let him in, he senses something is terribly wrong. Peeking through the window, Richard sees two threatening men confronting Deidre—loan sharks collecting on a debt she’s been hiding.
They intimidate her, brandish a gun, and begin seizing her equipment. Richard follows them to a shady club downtown and learns Deidre owes $80,000 to a gangster named Mr. Marco. Desperate to help, Richard offers his $20,000 savings. Marco demands more—and proposes Richard smuggle a car across the Canadian border.
Richard agrees, but at a gas station, a police dog reacts violently to the car. Panicked, Richard flees and ends up crashing the car into a river. He escapes drowning, but the car—and whatever illegal cargo it carried—is lost.
Back home, Richard mortgages his house to raise the full $80,000. When he returns to the club, Deidre insists on joining him. They deliver the money, but Marco is furious about the lost car and pulls a gun. Just as he’s about to shoot, police storm the club—thanks to the contraband-filled car Richard unwittingly sank.
Father and daughter survive the chaos and finally reconcile. Deidre breaks down, admitting she felt too ashamed to ask for help. Richard reminds her that trying and failing isn’t weakness—and that she’ll always have him.
