We Paid for My Stepdaughter’s Honeymoon, but She Called Us ‘Cheap’ — So We Taught Her

We gave Brooke everything: tuition paid, her dream vineyard wedding, even a luxury villa in the Dominican Republic for her honeymoon—ocean views, private pool, pure indulgence.

The next morning, she called. Furious.

“This place is tiny,” she snapped. “The pool’s a joke, the beach is far. You’re so cheap.”

Gary was speechless. After all we’d done, it wasn’t enough.

I didn’t argue. I called the villa manager and downgraded her stay to a plain hotel—no view, no extras. Just the basics.

A few hours later, she called again. This time, humbled. She saw what she’d lost. And what she’d taken for granted.

Turns out, the best way to teach gratitude isn’t through more—it’s through less.
